Mechanical Engineer III Description We believe power is a promise, a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most. For more than 65 years, we’ve turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses, and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future. Ready to Power a Smarter World with us? The Mechanical Engineer III will play a key role in new product development and sustaining engineering for mobile light towers and indirect-fired heater products. This position will lead or contribute significantly to complex engineering projects, including new product designs, product redesigns, cost-reduction initiatives, engineering changes, and product improvements. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong 3D CAD proficiency and the ability to manage major projects from concept through design release. The Mechanical Engineer III will collaborate closely with engineering, operations, manufacturing engineering, materials, purchasing, production, and warehouse teams to develop accurate, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions. The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who can work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and take ownership of project quality and delivery. Experience with indirect-fired heaters, furnace systems, diesel-powered equipment, power systems, trailers, sheet-metal enclosures, or mobile equipment is highly valued. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. Demonstrated proficiency with 3D CAD software. Experience leading or serving as a major contributor to a complex mechanical engineering project. Experience developing mechanical designs from concept through release. Ability to work effectively across engineering, operations, manufacturing, materials, and purchasing functions. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project-management skills. Ability to travel less than 10%. Preferred Qualifications Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, or comparable 3D CAD software. Experience designing indirect-fired heaters, furnaces, or other heating equipment. Experience with mobile light towers or similar industrial equipment. Knowledge of diesel engines, alternators, AC power systems, or power-generation equipment. Experience with trailer design, sheet-metal enclosures, or mobile equipment. Experience supporting new product development and sustaining engineering. Experience with cost-reduction initiatives and Engineering Change Orders. Previous experience mentoring junior engineers or designers. Experience working directly with production and manufacturing teams. Essential Duties Product Design and Development Lead or serve as a major technical contributor to new product development projects for mobile light towers, indirect-fired heaters, and related equipment. Develop mechanical designs from initial concept through design release and production implementation. Create and modify 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and supporting engineering documentation. Design mechanical systems and components involving trailers, sheet-metal enclosures, diesel engines, alternators, lighting systems, heating systems, and related equipment. Evaluate technical requirements and translate them into practical, manufacturable product solutions. Support product redesigns and major feature changes involving existing product platforms. Sustaining Engineering and Product Support Develop and implement Engineering Change Orders to improve existing products and resolve design or production issues. Support sustaining engineering activities across light tower and heater product lines. Investigate product issues and develop accurate, timely corrective solutions. Work directly with production and manufacturing teams to improve product quality and manufacturability. Ensure engineering releases are completed accurately and on schedule. Minimize follow-up changes by maintaining a high level of accuracy throughout the design and release process. Project Leadership Lead or make significant contributions to large engineering projects, including new products, redesigns, engine or emissions-related changes, and major product enhancements. Manage assigned projects through the design phase from beginning to end. Coordinate project requirements, priorities, deliverables, and timelines with cross-functional partners. Make sound engineering decisions while balancing performance, quality, manufacturability, cost, and schedule. Take ownership of assigned work and proactively move projects forward with limited supervision. Cost Reduction and Continuous Improvement Identify and execute product cost-reduction opportunities. Evaluate materials, components, designs, and manufacturing processes to improve overall product value. Partner with purchasing, materials, operations, and manufacturing engineering to implement cost-effective design solutions. Support continuous improvement efforts across engineering and production. Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate closely with materials, purchasing, production, warehouse operations, and manufacturing engineering. Work with engineering peers, designers, and bill-of-material specialists to support product development and engineering changes. Spend time in production and assembly areas to understand products, processes, and manufacturing challenges. Communicate technical information clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders. Build effective working relationships across a small, highly collaborative engineering team. Technical Leadership and Mentorship Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and less-experienced engineers. Review engineering work for technical quality, accuracy, and completeness. Promote accountability and ownership within project teams. Potentially provide future project or functional leadership as the engineering organization grows. Additional Responsibilities Maintain current knowledge of relevant mechanical engineering practices, tools, technologies, and industry developments. Adapt to changing business needs and project priorities in a growing engineering environment. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Environment and Location This position is preferably based at the Allmand facility in Holdrege, Nebraska. Candidates based near an approved engineering location in Wisconsin or Colorado may also be considered depending on business needs. Relocation may be available. The role requires regular collaboration with production and operations teams and may include time spent on the manufacturing floor. Travel is expected to be less than 10%. Opportunity This role offers the opportunity to join a growing engineering organization as light tower and heater engineering responsibilities expand. The Mechanical Engineer III will work on a broad range of assignments rather than performing the same tasks each day, with opportunities to contribute to new products, cost reductions, product improvements, and the continued development of the engineering function. Generac is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. Final compensation will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, qualifications, and geographic location. “We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.” “We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.” We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most.
