Full description
About the team You'll join Zillow's Developer Experience team, which enables every engineer across Zillow Group, spanning all of our products and brands. As AI changes how software is built, those engineers face familiar challenges: fragmented toolchains, slow feedback loops, and new tools arriving faster than paved paths can absorb them. We are building one paved path from idea to impact that is fast, safe, observable, and measurable. Our mission is to make the developer path of least resistance the path of highest leverage. Partnering with engineers, designers, data scientists, and researchers, we own the platforms and AI-native developer tooling and agents that span the software development lifecycle (SDLC), from planning and local development through code review, release, and post-release operations. We treat the platform as a product: we invest in golden paths, self-service tooling, and high-quality developer experiences so that every product team can ship for our customers faster and with higher quality. About the role AI is changing how software gets built, and Zillow is bringing its developer platforms together under one Developer Experience organization to lead that shift. We are hiring a Principal Product Manager to shape the strategy and execution of Zillow's AI-native software development lifecycle. You will partner closely with engineering leaders and engineers to define the developer platforms and AI-native tooling that measurably improve how Zillow builds software, and serve as the go-to expert on developer experience for senior leadership. This is a platform-as-a-product role: you will own outcomes rather than features, and you will drive adoption and migration across engineering teams you do not manage. You will own one distinct execution focus within a shared AI SDLC strategy. That focus is either the inner loop (the local, fast-feedback work developers do while planning and authoring code) or the outer loop (the shared pipeline from code review and merge through release and post-release operations). The two focus areas partner closely so the end-to-end developer journey feels like one coherent, intelligent path. You will get to - Define and evolve a cohesive product vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for your area of the AI SDLC, grounded in developer research and measurement frameworks such as DORA and SPACE. - Treat the platform as a product, drawing on operating models such as Team Topologies: establish golden paths, paved-road templates, and self-service capabilities so that the supported path is the fastest and most obvious one for engineers. - Embed AI-native developer tooling and agents across the workflow, from authoring through review and release, so that AI is a native part of how Zillow builds. - Drive adoption and migration outcomes across teams with no reporting relationship to you, using defaults, deprecation paths, enablement content, and a champions network to produce measurable change in how teams build. - Set and own targets for metrics that reflect the day-to-day impact on Zillow engineers, and use them to prioritize investments and iterate. - Represent your platform strategy with senior leaders and key stakeholders, communicating clear narratives, building consensus on priorities, and surfacing risks, dependencies, and trade-offs. Focus areas This role owns one of the two focus areas below. Both focus areas share the AI SDLC strategy above and partner closely. Inner loop: Developer Productivity and Intelligence - Own the local, fast-feedback developer experience: planning signals, paved-path starter kits, local build and test UX, and AI-native developer tooling and agents in the IDE and command line. - Improve the speed and quality of the developer inner loop, including a shorter edit-build-test cycle for web and mobile engineers. - Partner with engineering to make the entry surface (project setup, ownership, and standards) fast, discoverable, and self-service. Outer loop: Developer Experience across the pipeline - Own the shared path from merge and code review through release and post-release: merge-request experience, AI review bots and test generation, CI and merge gates, progressive delivery, and rollback. - Improve pipeline throughput and reliability, from CI speed and pass rates through release and rollback success. - Give teams trustworthy CI and release signals by partnering with delivery and observability teams on stable CI and artifact APIs. - Turn telemetry into action through catalog coverage, scorecards, and closed-loop automation. This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions. In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $182,100.00 - $290,900.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside. Who you are - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience. - 10+ years of experience in product management for technology products, including substantial experience building internal platforms, developer tooling, or large-scale distributed systems used by multiple teams across organizational boundaries. - Experience owning a platform portfolio rather than a single product area, prioritizing across interdependent capabilities with different customers, maturity levels, and lifecycles. - Strong technical fluency in modern software development practices and the developer toolchain, such as CI/CD, container ecosystems and Kubernetes, public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP), and observability, sufficient to reason about architectural trade-offs alongside senior engineers rather than gather requirements from them. - A hands-on perspective on AI-native development, such as IDE coding assistants, repository-aware or agentic tools, automated code review, and test generation, and a clear point of view on how AI is changing the software development experience. - Proven track record of driving adoption of platform standards across teams you do not manage, using data to shape strategy, prioritize trade-offs, and iterate after launch, paired with strong empathy for a developer audience. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical topics and influence at all levels of the organization.
