The pay range is $132,000.00 - $238,000.00 Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. As a Lead Engineer within Digital Enablement, you serve as the technical anchor for the engineering team building and supporting the platforms, tools, and reliability frameworks that help teams deliver scalable digital experiences. You own the application architecture, ensuring it meets functional and non-functional needs, and identify and drive architectural changes that accelerate delivery and improve reliability and operational efficiency. You bring deep and broad engineering expertise, while acting as a force multiplier: setting technical direction, establishing reusable engineering patterns, and guiding partner teams through complex distributed-systems challenges. You use automation and best practices to strengthen the stability of Target’s digital ecosystem. About this Team: The Digital Enablement team builds and supports the foundational platforms, tools, and reliability frameworks that empower Target’s digital product teams to deliver high-quality guest experiences at scale. We focus on improving engineering efficiency, operational excellence, and system reliability across the digital ecosystem. Our team partners closely with engineers across the enterprise to provide modern deployment tooling, observability frameworks, and best-in-class reliability practices that enable teams to innovate quickly while maintaining a highly resilient production environment. As a Lead Engineer, you’ll take the lead as you… Use your technology acumen to apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within specialized area(s) of the technology domain. Evaluate new technologies and participates in decision-making, accounting for several factors such as viability within Target’s technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership. Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities for new technologies. Lead or set strategy for testing and debugging at the platform or enterprise level. In complex and unstructured situations, serve as an expert resource to create and improve standards and best practices to ensure high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables. Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services. Provide the team with thought leadership to promote re-use and develop consistent, scalable patterns. Participate in planning services that have enterprise impact. Provide suggestions for handling routine and moderately complex technical problems, escalating issues when appropriate. Gather information, data, and input from a wide variety of sources; identify additional resources when appropriate, engage with appropriate stakeholders, and conduct in-depth analysis of information. Establish new standards and best practices to monitor, test, automate, and maintain IT components or systems. Serve as an expert resource in disaster recovery and disaster recovery planning. Stay current with Target’s technical capabilities, infrastructure, and technical environment. Develop fully attributed data models, including logical, physical, and canonical. Influence data standards, policies, and procedures. Install, configure, and/or tune data management solutions with minimal guidance. About you: Basic Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including delivering and supporting production systems through a full development lifecycle • Experience leading technical design and architecture for scalable, reliable services, APIs, or developer platforms • Strong programming experience in Go, TypeScript/Node.js, or comparable languages and frameworks • Experience building and operating production-grade APIs, backend services, developer tooling, or platform capabilities for digital web systems • 2+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices, including hands-on experience authoring and maintaining GitHub Actions workflows • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and containerized applications on platforms such as Kubernetes • Understanding of web delivery and CDN concepts, including caching, traffic routing, and edge configuration • Experience with observability practices, including logs, metrics, and distributed tracing, and using them to improve system reliability and performance • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction, influence engineering decisions, and mentor engineers across teams • Strong communication, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills Preferred Qualifications • Deep experience building and operating production services or developer tooling in Go and TypeScript/Node.js • Experience building reusable GitHub Actions, custom actions, or large-scale CI/CD pipelines • Experience with CDN platforms such as Fastly, including VCL or edge logic configuration • Experience designing APIs, SDKs, or platform capabilities consumed by multiple engineering teams • Experience with progressive deployment strategies such as canary, blue/green, or red/black deployments • Experience with secrets management, certificate lifecycle management, or software supply chain security • Experience with high-traffic web systems or e-commerce platform architecture • Experience establishing engineering standards and practices for reliability, operational readiness, and disaster recovery • Interest in or experience with developer experience tooling, AI-assisted development workflows, or internal platform engineering This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
