What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity? At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients. Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible. Position Summary Illumina's BioInsight Platform Core is the software foundation on which customers connect instruments, manage samples and projects, store and move data, run analysis workflows, and explore results — across cloud and on-prem deployments. As Director of Software Technical Product Management, BioInsight Platform Core Product, you own the product strategy, roadmap, and delivery partnership for Platform Core: the application-facing capabilities historically delivered as Illumina Connected Analytics (ICA) and related platform surfaces. You own instrument connectivity, data storage and data movement, workflow / pipeline execution, sample and project management, notebooks and interactive analysis, platform user experience, and APIs / developer experience — the product capabilities that make BioInsight Platform the durable home for Illumina software applications. You partner tightly with other software product leaders, as well as stakeholders across Engineering, Sales, Customer Success, Marketing, Finance, and Legal. Scope of Responsibilities Own BioInsight Platform Core product end-to-end: vision, multi-release roadmap, requirements quality, and release readiness for core platform capabilities Lead a team of software technical product managers; hire, coach, and set the bar for platform product excellence Serve as the primary product partner to platform engineering leadership on architecture bets, technical debt, reliability, performance, and security of core capabilities Define outcome metrics for platform success: availability, time-to-first-analysis, workflow success rate, storage and data-movement reliability, notebook / interactive-analysis adoption, API adoption, and support burden Ensure Platform Core meets enterprise and regulated-customer expectations for the capabilities it owns (security, privacy, auditability, quality-system interfaces where applicable) Navigate ambiguity across a platform that serves many applications; create a coherent product narrative and prioritization framework Represent BioInsight Platform Core in BioInsight leadership forums; escalate tradeoffs with clear recommendations Responsibilities Establish a multi-year roadmap for BioInsight Platform Core with clear problem statements and success metrics Own product requirements for core platform capabilities, including: Instrument connectivity — sequencer and lab instrument connection, run data ingress, status, and operational reliability Data storage and data movement — customer data stores, import/export, retention/lifecycle behaviors that affect product experience (commercial storage packaging partners with Commercialization) Workflow and pipeline execution — defining, launching, monitoring, and operating analysis workflows at scale Sample and project management — organizing biological and analysis context that applications and workflows depend on Notebooks and interactive analysis — exploratory / interactive compute experiences on platform data Platform UX and APIs — console experience, developer surfaces, and integration contracts used by applications and customers Partner with engineering leaders and architects to land technical bets safely; manage quality, cost, performance, and time tradeoffs Lead customer and field discovery on core-product friction (instrument connection, storage/workflow failures, notebook UX, API gaps, cross-application platform gaps); synthesize into prioritized bets Align with application TPMs (DRAGEN, Oncology / ICI, Genetic Disease, Multiomics, Orchestration) so Platform Core investments unlock portfolio-level outcomes Partner with the Commercialization Director at the boundary where core capabilities meet commercial systems (e.g., storage tiers that are sold, workflow compute that is metered) — Commercialization owns tenancy, IAM, entitlements, usage metering, and billing; Core owns the product capability customers use Define and review launch and post-market quality plans for Platform Core releases; engage Quality/Security/Privacy as needed Instrument core capabilities for product telemetry; drive iteration loops that improve adoption and reduce support load Support strategic customer engagements where Platform Core architecture, roadmap, or reliability is decisive Build and develop the core product team; raise the bar on PRDs, documentation, and cross-functional working agreements Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position. Changes to individual responsibilities may occur due to business needs. Experience / Education Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 18 years of related experience in a technical field (computer science, bioinformatics, engineering, life sciences, or related) or equivalent experience; advanced degree a plus Typically 12+ years of progressive experience in product management for scientific, data, or analysis platforms (workflow/pipeline systems, data platforms, instrument-to-cloud software, or developer-facing platforms), with 5+ years leading managers or senior ICs Track record shipping platform capabilities at scale — e.g., storage/data services, workflow orchestration or pipeline execution, notebooks / interactive compute, instrument or device connectivity, or APIs used by multiple consuming applications Experience in life sciences, health tech, genomics, or regulated software strongly preferred; prior ICA, BaseSpace, or equivalent genomics-platform experience is a significant plus Comfortable discussing architecture, APIs, data models, SLAs, and security with engineering leaders Strong executive communication skills; ability to create clarity under ambiguity Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or GCP and with hybrid / on-prem deployment models is a plus Requirements Proven ability to craft platform strategy, translate it into roadmaps, and ship iteratively Experience collaborating with engineering, design/UX, security, quality, and commercial teams Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle; design controls / ISO 13485 experience a plus where platform touches regulated workflows Ability to balance the needs of many consuming products without becoming a pure intake function Experience building or scaling a product management team; mentoring senior PMs Analytical rigor: product telemetry, reliability and workflow success metrics, adoption funnels, prioritization frameworks All listed requirements are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities. #LI-HYBRID The estimated base salary range for the Director, Software Technical Product Management role based in the United States of America is: $205,100 - $307,700.
