The Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Ammonia Technician to support the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring system reliability, regulatory compliance, and the efficient operation of refrigeration equipment throughout our facilities. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities, a commitment to safety, and experience working with ammonia refrigeration systems.


What You'll Do

Ammonia Refrigeration System Operations

  • Monitor and operate ammonia refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Conduct daily inspections and maintain accurate records of system pressures, temperatures, performance metrics, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure refrigeration systems are operating efficiently and safely while minimizing downtime.

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on ammonia refrigeration equipment according to established schedules and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Troubleshoot  and repair mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues.
  • Replace worn or defective components, including valves, pumps, piping, controls, and related equipment.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and system upgrades when necessary.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety procedures and protocols when working with anhydrous ammonia and other hazardous materials.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures, leak detection activities, and safety drills.
  • Maintain emergency response equipment and ensure readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable EPA, OSHA, PSM, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain required certifications and complete ongoing safety training.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, technical drawings, and P&ID diagrams.
  • Work independently to diagnose and resolve equipment issues.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  Requirements and Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
  3. EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification.
  4. Valid driver's license.
  5. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  6. Ability to work in refrigerated environments and around industrial equipment safely.

Preferred

  1. Associate degree or technical certification in Refrigeration, HVAC, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field.
  2. IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration) Certification or similar industry certification.
  3. OSHA 10-Hour Safety Training Certification.
  4. Experience in food processing, cold storage, manufacturing, or another industrial environment.
  5. Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

This position is represented by Local 533 and the person must enroll with the union if they are not already.
