Full description
The UI/UX Designer will improve how users navigate and complete tasks across NCCER’s digital products, including web applications, customer-facing websites and mobile experiences. This individual contributor will translate user needs and business requirements into clear, accessible designs, working with product stakeholders and software engineers from discovery through implementation. The role combines user experience research, interaction design and visual design to simplify complex workflows and improve product usability.
Major Duties:
- Partner with stakeholders and end users to identify workflow problems, clarify requirements and define the desired outcomes of design work.
- Conduct user interviews, usability tests and A/B testing; use Fullstory to analyze user behavior, identify usability issues and prioritize design improvements.
- Map user journeys, task flows and information architecture for processes such as applications, credential lookup and account management.
- Create wireframes, polished interface designs and interactive prototypes in Figma for responsive web and mobile experiences.
- Design navigation, forms and interface states, including validation, errors, loading and empty states, to help users complete tasks confidently.
- Apply accessibility practices to layouts and interactions; document keyboard behavior, focus order, contrast and screen reader considerations.
- Support Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) assessments by gathering test evidence, documenting accessibility gaps and contributing to Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) with engineers and accessibility specialists.
- Help respond to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requests involving digital products; clarify barriers, recommend accessible solutions and coordinate remediation and follow-up with support, engineering and the designated compliance contact.
- Create and maintain a design system and reusable component library in Figma using Untitled UI; collaborate with engineers to align React components with design standards, accessibility requirements and NCCER’s brand.
- Present design options and explain decisions using research, user needs and technical constraints; incorporate feedback from stakeholders.
- Collaborate with engineers and external vendors on specifications, assets and acceptance criteria; review implemented features and resolve design discrepancies.
- Use Jira to document design requirements, track usability and accessibility issues, and coordinate priorities and acceptance criteria during Agile planning.
- Other duties as assigned; this job description is not designed to contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the employee.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in design, human-computer interaction or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with at least three (3) years of UI/UX or digital product design experience.
- Portfolio demonstrating shipped digital products and the ability to explain the problem, personal contribution, design iterations and resulting outcomes.
- Experience supporting accessibility assessments and VPAT/ACR documentation, and helping resolve user accessibility or accommodation requests in collaboration with technical and business teams.
- Demonstrated proficiency in:
- Figma, including reusable components, auto layout, variants and interactive prototyping.
- Visual hierarchy, typography, spacing and interaction patterns for responsive interfaces.
- User interviews, usability testing and translating research findings into design decisions.
- User flows, wireframes and detailed design specifications for multi-step workflows.
- Working knowledge of:
- WCAG accessibility criteria and manual testing, including keyboard navigation and screen reader checks, supported by automated testing tools.
- Design systems and component libraries; familiarity with Untitled UI or experience adapting a comparable library.
- React component concepts, HTML and CSS sufficient to design feasible interfaces and collaborate with front-end engineers.
- Jira and Agile workflows for documenting requirements, tracking defects and coordinating delivery.
- Strong written, verbal and visual communication skills, including the ability to explain design tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Attention to detail, sound judgment and the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently and follow through on commitments.
- Collaborative approach with the ability to receive feedback, adapt designs and balance user needs with delivery constraints.
- Commitment to continuous learning and ability to use Fullstory or comparable analytics tools to inform design decisions and evaluate usability.
- Preferred: Experience with education, credentialing, accreditation or other products involving complex forms and administrative workflows.
- This is an in-office position.
